PENTAGON ORDERS DEAD OFFICERS TO REPORT FOR DUTY
The U.S. army said Friday it would apologize to the families of about 75 officers killed in action who were mistakenly sent letters urging them to return to active duty. --January 5, 2007 WASHINGTON (AP)

Will the dead please rise and raise
your right hands. Will the dead please
swear to uphold that hand for as long
as it takes. Will the dead please
reassemble your bones, replace
your heads, return your hearts, recant
your screams. Will the dead please
salute the flag flapping like tattooed skin
ripped from the body politic. Will the dead
please step onto the helicopters and into
the bodies of soldiers about to become you.
Give the living your history, your wisdom,
your sleepless eternities, your missteps
only they can make right, remind them
nightly to go on living. Will the dead
please buckle up and bring them home.

Wow- "Sicko" is an amazing movie. The corporate media can hype and whine all they want, but Moore hit this one out of the park. I'll be curious to see the reactions of other moviegoers...

Here's one more reason I love living in Western Mass...

(The video gets *really* good around the 2:38 mark, but it's all worth watching!)

For those of you who would rather read about it (although the video is SO much more entertaining), here's a link:

Former Bush aide Card is booed at UMass. If you read the article, it mentions that "The protests were mainly contained to an area in the back of the campus arena, though many of the faculty members onstage joined the three- to four- minute outburst." As you can see from the video, that was clearly not the case.

And, as quoted on the Wikipedia page about Card,

"In 2007, Card received an honorary degree in public service from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The decision by the university administration to give Card the degree was met with protests and petitions from thousands of university students, faculty, staff, and community members. They argued that Card played a leading role in disseminating deceptive and misleading evidence to justify the Iraq War. At the May 25, 2007 graduate school commencement ceremony, hundreds of students, faculty, and staff protested the award with boos and catcalls as Andrew Card accepted the degree. Protesters, including many faculty on stage, drowned out Provost Charlena Seymour's remarks, asserting that Card lied about the Iraq war."

Holy...crap.... Have you all seen this yet???

So I know this post is a bit delayed, but I wanted to process before screaming about the State of the Union speech. Being the nerd that I am, I actually took notes so I'd remember points that really chapped my hide. Funny thing is, not a lot made me curse at the television. I suppose it's because most of the speech was a repeat of what we've all heard before- the same old lies that have ceased to cause an immediate "F*** you, Bush!" reaction.

Anywho... Some general observations and some points from the speech... )

Nuke-you-lure, al-qaeda, the "author of freedom"... blah blah blah

Since when does the Bush administration care about genocide? When did America become the land of "freedom and moderation"???

Bah, king george. You looked scared. And you know what? You damn well should be.

Hypocrites

Republicans as of late (well, always really) have been a prime example of my biggest pet peeve. I can't think of anything worse than hypocrisy. My favorite poster boy as of late is Mark Foley. Foley, who championed for stronger internet predator laws; who said that people who prey on children are sick and should be locked away. He doth protest too much, methinks.

It's interesting how many people will rally to fight against a misdeed which they themselves are guilty of. Almost as if they believe that protesting will protect them from ever being accused or convicted. But we all know that isn't the case.

You can advocate for stronger internet predator, drug, domestic abuse, rape, etc. laws but it still won't change the fact that you have been indulging in the very things you claim to hold so morally reprehensible. It also won't change the fact that the people will turn against you once your actions are known- as they damn well should.

If a party is going to spout off about "family values," they may want to make sure they are practicing them. At the very least, they may want to make sure they aren't breaking any laws before handing out moral advice to the rest of the public.

Well, they received their smackdown. Let's see if we will continue to hold everyone else's feet to the fire...

Buh-bye!

Halle-effin'-lujah!

As for the commentary from the Shrub, can we say flippy flip-flopper? Yeah, it's all about covering your ass now, isn't it? The idea of a looming impeachment process tends to do that to ruthless dictators...

And for more good news, Democrats have regained the House after 12 looooong years. Now we await news from Virginia regarding the Senate. If you wanna see a handy little map, go HERE

My faith in the American people is slowly being restored. Let's see if we can keep that momentum rolling, eh? I'd hate to have to run off to Canada or something.... eh.

Not a lot of time or energy to write a long entry about the protest in NY today. So for now this clip and these pics will have to suffice. I'm exhausted, but happy...

I don't know how I missed this before, but this is just disgusting. We can "find" weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify a war but we can't find our own citizens on our own turf in a 10 square block radius? Beyond despicable.

Except that this pissed me off:

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/062906K.shtml

But maybe this makes up for it:

The Department of Defense has recently reported that 8,000 members of the US military are listed as AWOL. Currently 24 war resisters are known to be in Canada trying to establish citizenship, with an estimated several hundred more living there underground.

Truthout's Sari Gelzer and Geoffrey Millard report from Buffalo, New York, and Fort Erie, Ontario, to bring you coverage of Peace Has No Borders, an event that brought US attention to political refugees in Canada. Geoffrey Millard interviews war resisters about their decision to refuse deployment to Iraq and seek asylum in Canada.

Every once in a while I fondly remember being a wee thing and staying up at
night (even though I was supposed to be sleeping) to tape Dan Savage's radio
show. Then he started doing his column and everyone in the world knew who he
was. *sigh* I was on to him first!

But ever since I left Seattle, Dan Savage has fallen off my radar. This
lovely link was sent to me by devi_gaz.
God bless her for sending it to me!
