You take a short quiz on the issues and rate their importance to you. The quiz then lists the candidates in the order by which they most closely matched the criteria you just entered.

ENDA on floor NOW
Nov. 7th, 2007 01:20 pmBarney Frank is speaking right now on the House floor. He's insisting that the house members who are fighting to include the Baldwin Amendment are attempting to undermine the ENDA bill currently on the floor for debate and vote.
Not a perfect quote, but as close as I could get: "If we do not have the votes to go forward as much as we'd like to, do we then abandon any effort? Do we allow the use of a particular group to prevent progress?"
I cannot wait until this man is booted from his office out on his arse.

I am pleased by Rep. Doc Hastings from (of all places!) Yakima, WA. He is pushing hard for the representatives to vote NO on a previous rule vote which does not allow the house to vote on any amendments to ENDA. When Rep. Barbara Lee (Oakland, CA) was speaking in support of the Baldwin Amendment, she was cut off quite forcefully. Hastings conceded some of his time so Lee could finish her statement. He also spent some of his time arguing back and forth with Frank.
I am, however, heartened by the number of representatives speaking against the current state of ENDA and lobbying for the Baldwin Amendment.
I could sit here and update the debate all day, but I'm sure we'll have enough to review later. So I'll post separately with my personal rant.
EDIT: Still wonder why I love Kucinich?
"This is one of those moments where the Housee gets to demonstrate the degree to which we are truly committed to... due process and equal protection of the law. I believe that people who happen to be gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender are entitled to the full and equal protection of employment laws...
None of us can know unless we've walked in somebody's shoes... Imagine what they must go through in their daily lives. And imagine that we would separate those people from... the claims of constitutional protection.
To be an American means really standing for those constitutional principles... I'm very concerned that the Baldwin Amendment can be offered and pulled back without a vote."

House committee decides to advance a version of ENDA that cuts out protections for transgender people
I am writing from the hearing room of the House Committee on Education and Labor. Sadly, I write to report that the Committee just passed by a vote of 27 to 21 the substitute Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) that was introduced specifically to exclude transgender and other gender variant people.
We are greatly disappointed that the committee chose to move forward with a bill that is not endorsed by a single LGBT organization. It is historically unprecedented that Congress would pass a civil rights law that the civil rights community--including those it is meant to protect--do not want.
Tremendous effort by over three hundred organizations--including NCTE--and tens of thousands of individuals came close to fixing ENDA after it was precipitously gutted to exclude gender identity and transgender people. Unfortunately, we have fallen short at this stage.
It is not over. NCTE will continue over the next few days to look for opportunities to impact H.R.3685 to return to it the original intent of H.R.2015.
Additionally, because it is very unlikely that any Employment Non-Discrimination Act will be signed into law, NCTE and many of our allies will continue to work to demand an ENDA in the next Congress that meets the needs of the LGBT.
NCTE applauds the efforts of the many individuals and organizations who have worked so hard thus far on behalf of all LGBT people. We especially applaud the very brave NO votes cast this morning by absolutely firm LGBT supporters who voted NO as a statement that ENDA without gender identity is not worth passing. These members, who deserve our thanks for standing so strongly on moral principle include Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Rush Holt (D-NJ), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).

Another Ranty Rant About the HRC
Oct. 2nd, 2007 09:58 amThe HRC has decided it will not oppose the two bill ENDA strategy.
From their press release:
"Therefore, we are not able to support, nor will we encourage Members of Congress to vote against, the newly introduced sexual orientation only bill."
It is interesting to note that the part in bold has been removed from the statement posted on their site, despite being included in press releases.

HRC Logo Thingy

So after getting a bunch of emails saying "How do I make stickers?" I decided to put it up on CafePress. I didn't mark up the price at all, so I'm not making a profit from these; the cost covers just the printing.
Please tell people they are welcome to print their own stickers if they have the right paper (can get at Staples or Office Max) and don't want to have to order over the internet.
Anything with the logo is at base price (no profit for me). I have no inclination to make a profit from protesting an organization like the HRC.

Oct. 1st, 2007 06:47 pmI was already mad at the HRC. Then I got home and found the packet they sent me for Coming Out Day. Absolutely everything has the HRC logo on it, and all the pamphlets proclaim their support for trans people (despite trans people being marginally included in those pamphlets). So I made a new logo. I'll be printing it tomorrow and putting it on my car. I'm also posting it all over the 'net, so feel free to pass it along!

Angelina Jolie announced at today's Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) that members of the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which Jolie co-founded as part of a 2006 CGI commitment, has pledged to educate more than one million children whose lives have been irrevocably shaken by conflict around the world—including young people affected by Darfur genocide, girls and youth in rural Afghanistan, and other groups across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

"All benefits and legal entitlements available to heterosexual couples should be available to homosexual couples... Under a Kucinich Administration, transgendered persons will have the full protection of all legal rights, including the right to obtain a passport, and will have full access to comprehensive health coverage."
John Edwards struggles with gay marriage, but has this page on LGBTQ issues which includes trans people...
Obama opposes marriage and says nothing about trans people, but at least has a mediocre LGBTQ page...
And Clinton's website has this to say about LGBTQ issues: " {crickets chirping}*
