I Am Legend

So the movie was ok. Not something I'd necessarily recommend, because it's all been done before. But if you like viral apocalypse-type movies with un-dead thingies, by all means rush out to see it.

My real issue was the number of kids in the audience. We were sitting next to a few kids- best guess on ages are 10-12 years. Now, I watched a lot of PG-13 and even R movies when I was younger. Of course, many of those ratings were due to "adult content" (like seeing the naked breasts of a native woman in the South American jungles *gasp!*) and they were not horror genre.

A PG-13 rating doesn't mean a movie's not scary, it just means there isn't swearing or naked breasts or gore. I won't give out any spoilers, but I find it hard to believe that a small kid isn't going to have nightmares or insist on sleeping with the lights on after seeing this film. WTF, people?

Here are just a few examples of some PG-13 rated movies I would never let my 10 year old see:

1408
Boogeyman
Darkness Falls
One Missed Call
Stay Alive
The Grudge
The Messengers
The Ring

I could go on and on (and grrr about the kids at rated R movies, too) but I won't. Bottom line- I think people should be checking out these movies before dragging their 10 year old along with them. If nothing else, the parent/s will sleep better without their kid clinging to them all night...

Freakout

Have you all seen those Whopper commericals on tv- the ones where Burger King decides to "discontinue" the Whopper for a day to see what happens? It's pretty disturbing, I think.

The rest is under here )

I should know better than to answer the door when I feel crappy.

It doesn't matter how nice you are, I still don't want your pamphlets about how Jesus will keep my children safe from drugs and homosexuals.

PENTAGON ORDERS DEAD OFFICERS TO REPORT FOR DUTY
The U.S. army said Friday it would apologize to the families of about 75 officers killed in action who were mistakenly sent letters urging them to return to active duty. --January 5, 2007 WASHINGTON (AP)

Will the dead please rise and raise
your right hands. Will the dead please
swear to uphold that hand for as long
as it takes. Will the dead please
reassemble your bones, replace
your heads, return your hearts, recant
your screams. Will the dead please
salute the flag flapping like tattooed skin
ripped from the body politic. Will the dead
please step onto the helicopters and into
the bodies of soldiers about to become you.
Give the living your history, your wisdom,
your sleepless eternities, your missteps
only they can make right, remind them
nightly to go on living. Will the dead
please buckle up and bring them home.

Insanity in Health Care

This is one of the most disgusting things I've heard lately...

Woman Dies in L.A. Emergency Room Waiting Area

And if the article isn't enough to piss you off, try checking out the audio of the TWO 9-1-1 calls made by her boyfriend and by another person in the ER waiting area:

1st Call

2nd Call (This one gets really interesting around the 1:00 mark)

As if I wasn't worried enough about having to be seen in an ER....

Wish I Had a River...

WTF?

I wake up to a stream running through our back yard, as well as a river raging down our street. This weather is insane and it doesn't look like it's about to stop any time soon. I'm telling you, this planet is about ready to swallow us whole. Sometimes I think that wouldn't be such a bad thing. Like Smith said in The Matrix:

"I'd like to share with you a revelation I've had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you aren't actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague..."

To add to my jovial mood, I heard the oddest sound a few minutes ago. It was an air raid siren. You know, the kind that starts slow and builds into a high-pitched wail? I have no idea where it was coming from, but it ended after 2 or 3 minutes. Anyone local know something about this area that I don't? (FYI- Westover is about 20 minutes from my place, so I doubt it was coming from there).

In other news... I can finally stop using the silly nickname "Crusader" for my friend Marc Adams and share with you all that I am officially a board member of HeartStrong! HeartStrong is a non sectarian organization established to provide outreach to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and other persons adversely affected by the influence of all denominations of religious educational institutions. HeartStrong is also committed to educating the public about the persecution of GLBT’s and others at religious educational institutions. You can learn more at: http://www.heartstrong.org/

The best part is that the annual board meeting is being held in Miami this year. So I get to pack my bags for a few days in April and head to the sun and surf. And Kat's coming, too! We scheduled the flights so we'd get a little bit of time to check out the local scene and enjoy the beach. God, it's been so long since I've felt sand between my toes or smelled that salty air. I can't wait!

State of (our?) Union

So I know this post is a bit delayed, but I wanted to process before screaming about the State of the Union speech. Being the nerd that I am, I actually took notes so I'd remember points that really chapped my hide. Funny thing is, not a lot made me curse at the television. I suppose it's because most of the speech was a repeat of what we've all heard before- the same old lies that have ceased to cause an immediate "F*** you, Bush!" reaction.

Anywho... Some general observations and some points from the speech... )

Ok...?

I just checked my mail and there was a package. Hooray! Then I opened it.

Inside was the Qur'an and a letter thanking me for my request for a free copy.

Uhhh. What?

Not that I have a problem with having a copy of the Qur'an in my house, but how the heck did it get here???

I'm sure another red flag was just added to my Homeland Security file....

Yes, I'm a stickler. No, I do not like it when people use there/their/they're or your/you're incorrectly. It's pretty easy, really, to distinguish between them. Call me a snob if you must. I also don't get all the odd internet-speak (the usual acronyms aside). So, yes, this link amused me greatly:

Karma

I've decided today that something deep in the soul of Massachusetts hates
me. I'd like to say that I humbly apologize to the state for whatever wrongs
I may have done it in a past life... but I'd rather tell it to go fuck
itself.
