This is one of the most disgusting things I've heard lately...

Woman Dies in L.A. Emergency Room Waiting Area

And if the article isn't enough to piss you off, try checking out the audio of the TWO 9-1-1 calls made by her boyfriend and by another person in the ER waiting area:

1st Call

2nd Call (This one gets really interesting around the 1:00 mark)

As if I wasn't worried enough about having to be seen in an ER....

Here's one more reason I love living in Western Mass...

(The video gets *really* good around the 2:38 mark, but it's all worth watching!)

For those of you who would rather read about it (although the video is SO much more entertaining), here's a link:

Former Bush aide Card is booed at UMass. If you read the article, it mentions that "The protests were mainly contained to an area in the back of the campus arena, though many of the faculty members onstage joined the three- to four- minute outburst." As you can see from the video, that was clearly not the case.

And, as quoted on the Wikipedia page about Card,

"In 2007, Card received an honorary degree in public service from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The decision by the university administration to give Card the degree was met with protests and petitions from thousands of university students, faculty, staff, and community members. They argued that Card played a leading role in disseminating deceptive and misleading evidence to justify the Iraq War. At the May 25, 2007 graduate school commencement ceremony, hundreds of students, faculty, and staff protested the award with boos and catcalls as Andrew Card accepted the degree. Protesters, including many faculty on stage, drowned out Provost Charlena Seymour's remarks, asserting that Card lied about the Iraq war."

WTF?

I wake up to a stream running through our back yard, as well as a river raging down our street. This weather is insane and it doesn't look like it's about to stop any time soon. I'm telling you, this planet is about ready to swallow us whole. Sometimes I think that wouldn't be such a bad thing. Like Smith said in The Matrix:

"I'd like to share with you a revelation I've had, during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you aren't actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with its surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply, and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague..."

To add to my jovial mood, I heard the oddest sound a few minutes ago. It was an air raid siren. You know, the kind that starts slow and builds into a high-pitched wail? I have no idea where it was coming from, but it ended after 2 or 3 minutes. Anyone local know something about this area that I don't? (FYI- Westover is about 20 minutes from my place, so I doubt it was coming from there).

In other news... I can finally stop using the silly nickname "Crusader" for my friend Marc Adams and share with you all that I am officially a board member of HeartStrong! HeartStrong is a non sectarian organization established to provide outreach to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and other persons adversely affected by the influence of all denominations of religious educational institutions. HeartStrong is also committed to educating the public about the persecution of GLBT’s and others at religious educational institutions. You can learn more at: http://www.heartstrong.org/

The best part is that the annual board meeting is being held in Miami this year. So I get to pack my bags for a few days in April and head to the sun and surf. And Kat's coming, too! We scheduled the flights so we'd get a little bit of time to check out the local scene and enjoy the beach. God, it's been so long since I've felt sand between my toes or smelled that salty air. I can't wait!

Day 5 of the tonsils of doom. Aside from the pain factor, being sick is sooo boring. There are only so many Top Chef reruns I can take before popping another oxy. I still blame Herbie Schwartz for all of this...

So I know this post is a bit delayed, but I wanted to process before screaming about the State of the Union speech. Being the nerd that I am, I actually took notes so I'd remember points that really chapped my hide. Funny thing is, not a lot made me curse at the television. I suppose it's because most of the speech was a repeat of what we've all heard before- the same old lies that have ceased to cause an immediate "F*** you, Bush!" reaction.

Anywho... Some general observations and some points from the speech... )

Since when does the Bush administration care about genocide? When did America become the land of "freedom and moderation"???

Bah, king george. You looked scared. And you know what? You damn well should be.

Yes, I'm a stickler. No, I do not like it when people use there/their/they're or your/you're incorrectly. It's pretty easy, really, to distinguish between them. Call me a snob if you must. I also don't get all the odd internet-speak (the usual acronyms aside). So, yes, this link amused me greatly:

Republicans as of late (well, always really) have been a prime example of my biggest pet peeve. I can't think of anything worse than hypocrisy. My favorite poster boy as of late is Mark Foley. Foley, who championed for stronger internet predator laws; who said that people who prey on children are sick and should be locked away. He doth protest too much, methinks.

It's interesting how many people will rally to fight against a misdeed which they themselves are guilty of. Almost as if they believe that protesting will protect them from ever being accused or convicted. But we all know that isn't the case.

You can advocate for stronger internet predator, drug, domestic abuse, rape, etc. laws but it still won't change the fact that you have been indulging in the very things you claim to hold so morally reprehensible. It also won't change the fact that the people will turn against you once your actions are known- as they damn well should.

If a party is going to spout off about "family values," they may want to make sure they are practicing them. At the very least, they may want to make sure they aren't breaking any laws before handing out moral advice to the rest of the public.

Well, they received their smackdown. Let's see if we will continue to hold everyone else's feet to the fire...
thisearthlyride: (bush c*o*unt)
I don't know how I missed this before, but this is just disgusting. We can "find" weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify a war but we can't find our own citizens on our own turf in a 10 square block radius? Beyond despicable.

I've been learning a lot lately... One thing I've been considering quite a bit is pacifism...

As most of you know, I have considered myself a pacifist for over 13 years now. And I frequently get into debates with people over it. "What? You wouldn't defend yourself? You think war is ALWAYS wrong?" And my common answer is that violence is not necessary if we are paying attention to the warning signs that it is coming and do something before it happens. Which is usually true.

The problem is that we live in a society where we tell people not to physically hurt themselves or others, then turn around and bomb the crap out of some Iraqi village, obliterating families and children. How can people believe that violence isn't an answer when our society so clearly condones it (as long as it's the "good guys" doing the killing, that is)?

I bring this up because I have felt severely violent on and off recently. And I have felt weak for feeling that way, even though I have not followed through on any of the impulses which have taken over my brain like a crazy virus. But I finally reminded myself of this:

Pacifism does not mean that we never have the urge to be violent. It does not mean that we shirk the responsibility of dealing with our problems by saying "Hey, it's cool, man, peace and love" and just let it all go.  Pacifism means recognizing that we humans are animals with instinctual natures. It means acknowledging those times that we want to strike out in rage- and then not following through. It means that each time we feel rage we step back and look at a new way to deal with that impulse.

I'm learning a lot about my beliefs... and that isn't something I would have learned if I hadn't felt the way I have in the past few days. So hooray to the universe for pulling a trick out of the crazy hat that is my life right now!

WHY?!?!?

Why do people send me this kind of crap? Was I unclear about being
a bleeding heart liberal, diversity-loving, "equal rights for all" pacifist
?

God forbid we allow diversity and cultural learning in this country- the
so-called "melting pot" of the world. And god help the people who come to
this country seeking a better life, only to be greeted by idiots like the
author of the trash below...

I'm tempted to write back saying that we should just ban St. Patrick's Day
parades, too. How do you think THAT would go over in Massachusetts?

Read the crap that started my stupid rant....

Again... how the fuck does this make sense????

"HNE does not cover cosmetic services... The primary purpose of cosmetic or beautifying surgeries.. is to improve, alter or enhance appearance or self image. They are not necessary to maintain or restore essential bodily function, or they are performed for psychological or emotional reasons."

This, of course, includes all trans-related surgeries.

But then...

"Reconstructive or restorative surgery is covered... when needed to correct a congenital anomaly and/or birth defect to restore essential bodily functions... HNE will provide coverage for: A) Reconstruction of the breast on which mastectomy was performed. B) Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance."

Now, I'm not saying that women who need mastectomies shouldn't be able to get reconstructive surgery. But wouldn't that qualify under surgeries "performed for psychological or emotional reasons"??? And just how is creating a new breast "restoring essential bodily functions"???

Ok, just felt like venting.. I'm off to dinner...
